ἀνταλλαγτος, τό (ἀντί in place of, in turn, and ἄλλαγμα see ἀλλάσσω), "that which is given in place of another thing by way of exchange; what is given either in order to keep or to acquire anything": [Mat 16:26]; [Mar 8:37], where the sense is, 'nothing equals in value the soul's salvation.' Christ transfers a proverbial expression respecting the supreme value of the natural life (Homer, Iliad 9, 401 οὐ γάρ ἐμοί ψυχῆς ἀνταξιον) to the life eternal. ([Rth 4:7]; [Jer 15:13]; Sir. 6:15, etc.; Euripides, Or. 1157; Josephus, b. j. 1, 18, 3.)
