I

1. aor. ἐξένευσα, turn the head out of its natural position, of a horse, ἐ. ἄνω to toss the head, X. Eq. 5.4; τῇ κεφαλῇ ἐκνεύσας by a side-movement with the head, of the wild boar, Id. Cyn. 10.12, cf. LXX 2Ki 23:16.

1. to bend to one side (τῇ κεφαλή, Xenophon, ven. 10, 12).

2. to take oneself away, withdraw: Joh 5:13, where Chrysostom says that ἐξενευσε is equivalent to ἐξεκλινε; but others derive the form from ἐκνέω, which see (the Sept. for סוּר, Jdg 4:18 Alex.; פָּנָה, to turn oneself, Jdg 18:26 Alex.; 2Ki 2:24; 2Ki 23:16; (add 3Macc. 3:22; Josephus, Antiquities 7, 4, 2). In secular authors also transitively, to avoid a thing; as τά βέλη, Diodorus 15, 87; πληγήν, ibid. 17, 100.)
