II the sense of smell, = cross ὄσφρησις, Democr. 11, Hsch. - The older form ὀδμή (cf. ὄδωδα, ὄζ-ω, od-or) is alone used by Hom., Hdt., and Pi.; it occurs also in A. Pr. 115 (lyr.), Democr. l. c., and in later Prose, Thphr. CP 6.14.1, al., Phylarch. 63 J., Diocl.Fr. 129, Anon.Lond. 34.38, etc.; but ὀσμή is Att. acc. to Phryn. 71; also Ion., Hippon.in PSI 9.1089.11.

ὀσμῆς, ἡ (ὄζω (which see)), a smell, odor: [Joh 12:3]; [2Co 2:14]; θανάτου (L T Tr WH ἐκ θανάτου), such an odor as is emitted by death (i. e. by a deadly, pestiferous thing, a dead body), and itself causes death, [2Co 2:16]; ζωῆς (or ἐκ ζωῆς) such as is diffused (or emitted) by life, and itself imparts life, ibid. (A. V. both times savor); ὀσμή εὐωδίας, [Eph 5:2]; [Phi 4:18]; see εὐωδία, b. (Tragg., Thucydides, Xenophon, Plato, others; in Homer ὀδμή; the Sept. for רֵיחַ.)
