G1982 — ἐπισκιάζω
(imperfect ἐπεσκιαζον, [Luk 9:34] L marginal reading T Tr text WH); future ἐπισκιάσω; 1 aorist ἐπεσκίασα; to throw a shadow upon, to envelop in shadow, to overshadow: τίνι, [Act 5:15]. From a vaporous cloud that casts a shadow the word is transferred to a shining cloud surrounding and enveloping persons with brightness: τινα, [Mat 17:5]; [Luk 9:34]; τίνι, [Mar 9:7]. Tropically, of the Holy Spirit exerting creative energy upon the womb of the virgin Mary and impregnating it (a use of the word which seems to have been drawn from the familiar O. T. idea of a cloud as symbolizing the immediate presence and power of God): with the dative [Luk 1:35]. (In secular authors generally with an accusative of the object and in the sense of obscuring: Herodotus 1, 209; Sophocles, Aristotle, Thcophr., Philo, Lucian, Herodian, Geoponica. the Sept. for סָכַך to cover, [Psa 90:4]; [Psa 139:8]; for שָׁכַן, [Exo 40:29-35]ἐπεσκίαζεν ἐπί τήν σκηνήν ἡ νεφέλη; (cf. Winer's Grammar, § 52, 4, 7).)
