λουτροῦ, τό (λούω), from Homer down (who uses λοετρόν, from the uncontracted form λοέω), a bathing, bath, i. e. as well the act of bathing (a sense disputed by some (cf. Ellicott on [Eph 5:26])), as the place; used in the N. T. and in ecclesiastical writings of baptism (for examples see Sophocles' Lexicon, under the word): with τοῦ ὕδατος added, [Eph 5:26]; τῆς παλιγγενεσίας, [Tit 3:5].
